About Us
I grew up in Hanoi, near a silk village that has been weaving for around a thousand years. My grandmother's most prized clothes were her silk pants and shirts, the ones she wore through Hanoi summers when the heat sits on your skin and refuses to leave. She wore them, cared for them and kept them for decades.
A scholarship eventually took me overseas. I completed a PhD in Information Systems at Curtin University in Australia and later received the Newton International Postdoctoral Fellowship, jointly awarded by the British Academy and the Royal Society.
My research focused on technology, economic opportunity and poverty alleviation. That work took me across 23 countries, consulting for organizations including the United Nations, USAID and the Asian Development Bank across Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
After years of writing reports about how businesses could create opportunity, I wanted to try building one myself. That is how Tara Sartoria began.
We work with 27 momme mulberry silk woven on heritage looms in Vietnam's historic silk villages. Every garment is made one piece at a time by master artisans and finished with French seams. Turn one of our garments inside out and you'll see the construction. The raw edges are enclosed inside French seams. Our standard sizes run from XS to 4XL. We use the same silk and construction at every size.
Every garment arrives in a handcrafted silk pouch you can reuse for travel, washing or storage. There is also a handwritten note from the artisan who made your piece.
We work directly with artisans. The garments are cut and sewn by skilled tailors rather than sent down a factory assembly line. 10% of profits fund women's education and entrepreneurship.

Tara is named for the Buddhist goddess of compassion and protection. Sartoria is the Italian word for a tailor's workshop.
