Why Silk Robes Make Better Gifts Than Pajamas

By Tara Nguyen, Ph.D., Founder and Creative Director, Tara Sartoria

Finding a good gift is surprisingly difficult. You want something beautiful, but not useless. Personal, but not risky. Generous, but not the kind of thing that quietly disappears into a drawer. After ten years of running a silk company, I have watched the same pattern repeat across every gifting season: customers reach for pajamas because pajamas feel like the obvious silk gift, and then half of them write back asking if they can exchange for a robe. The robe is the better gift, and the reason has very little to do with the silk. It is about fit. A robe forgives almost everything pajamas forgive almost nothing.

A Short Answer for the Person Skimming

If you are buying silk as a gift and you are not certain about size, choose a robe. A silk robe fits a range of body sizes within a single size, has fewer fit-sensitive points than pajamas, and is worn for longer occasions in the day. A robe is also the silk piece customers most often describe as the gift that worked. Pajamas are a better second gift, once you know what they actually wear. Both robes and pajamas at Tara Sartoria are made one piece at a time by master artisans in Vietnam's historic silk villages, sized XS to 4XL, machine washable, and shipped in a silk pouch with a handwritten note.

The Fit Problem No One Talks About

Pajamas have to fit in five places. The shoulders. The chest. The waist. The hip. The inseam. Get any one of them wrong and the pajamas will be lived in once and folded away. A pajama top that is tight across the shoulders becomes a pajama top that never leaves the drawer. A pajama pant that is short in the rise becomes a pajama pant the recipient will never mention but never wear.

A silk robe has to fit in two places. The shoulders, lightly, and the sash. That is the whole list. Length differences of two or three inches are forgiving on a robe because the robe falls around the body rather than against it. A robe sized S will look correct on someone shaped for XS and someone shaped for M. A pair of pajamas sized S will look correct on someone shaped for S, and most of the rest of the time, look wrong.

This is the part the gifting industry will not tell you. Every gift guide that recommends pajamas as a generic gift assumes the buyer knows the recipient's body measurements. Most buyers do not, and the recipients are the ones who quietly suffer for it.

What Happens to a Pajama Gift That Doesn't Quite Fit

It gets worn once. The recipient is grateful. They will tell you it is beautiful. They will not tell you that the waistband is half an inch off, or that the sleeve is short, or that the neckline pulls when they turn over in the night. These are not complaints anyone wants to make about a gift, especially a gift made of silk that clearly cost something.

So the pajamas live in the drawer next to other pajamas that almost fit. They are washed twice a year out of guilt. They are eventually folded into a donation pile after the relationship has shifted enough that the original gift no longer matters.

This is not a hypothetical. This is the email I get more often than any other email, written by the recipient: *I love these but they don't quite fit and I feel terrible asking my [husband, sister, mother-in-law] if I can exchange them.* They feel terrible because they understand the gift was given carefully and they do not want to seem ungrateful. They also know the gift is not going to be worn.

A robe almost never produces this email. The fit problem does not exist in the same way.

What Happens to a Robe That Doesn't Quite Fit

Almost nothing. A robe sized one up is still wearable. A robe sized one down is usually wearable too. The sash adjusts for both. The drape forgives the gap. The garment does the work the body would otherwise have to do.

The most common note we receive about gifted robes is the opposite of the pajama email. It is the recipient saying they did not expect to wear it as much as they do. Robes earn their place in the daily rotation faster than pajamas because the fit is not negotiating with the body every morning. The garment goes on without thought.

This is the practical truth behind why customers tell us robes were the gift that worked. The silk does not have to win over the recipient on the first wearing. The fit does not have to be exact. The robe just has to arrive, fit roughly, and be there in the morning. The rest takes care of itself.

Which Robe for Which Recipient

The Tara Sartoria robe collection is built around a few clear choices, and the gift question usually answers itself once you know who you are buying for.

For a partner who has never owned a silk robe.

Choose the long classic robe in a restrained color. Charcoal, deep navy, or ivory. This is the safest gift in the silk category. It reads as adult, generous, and useful, and the fit forgives almost any uncertainty.

For a partner who already owns silk.

Choose the kimono robe or a more distinct color. They already trust silk; the gift can take a small step toward something specific to their taste.

For a partner's mother or someone you don't know well.

Choose the short robe in a quieter color. Modest cut, friendlier price point, lower risk on every dimension. The pillowcase is the next-safest alternative if you want to step back further.

For a new parent.

Choose the long robe in a calming color and the matching pillowcase if the budget allows. Robes get worn through every part of new-parent life because they go on quickly, are warm without being heavy, and survive the kind of washing schedule that destroys lesser fabrics.

For yourself, in a year when you have been thinking about it.

Start with the long robe. The pajamas can come second.

When Pajamas Are the Right Gift

Pajamas are a wonderful gift, but they are a better second gift than a first one. The right time for pajamas is when you already know the recipient wears silk, you have seen them in a robe or a pillowcase, and you know their pajama size because they have told you or because they have already bought pajamas in this size from this brand.

A pajama set as a tenth anniversary gift, after a robe was given for a fifth, is the right sequence. A pajama set as a first silk gift for someone whose body measurements are a guess is the wrong gift made of a beautiful material. The result is not failure exactly. It is just smaller than what the buyer hoped for.

The exception is the silk pajama pant on its own, sold separately. The pant is more forgiving than a full set because there is only one garment to fit, and the relaxed cut of our pants tolerates a wider range of bodies than a fitted top. If you want to send a half-step gift between pillowcase and full pajamas, the pant alone is a useful middle.

How Our Robes Are Made

Each robe is made one piece at a time by a master artisan in Vietnam's historic silk villages. The silk is woven on heritage looms, which gives it the substantial drape that makes a silk robe feel like a real garment instead of a flutter. The seams are French seams, fully enclosed on both sides, which means there are no raw edges anywhere inside the robe and the seams last longer than the fabric they hold together.

Sizes run XS to 4XL as standard, with custom sizing available when needed. The robe is machine washable on a delicate cycle. It ships in a silk pouch with a handwritten note. The fabric is 27 momme mulberry silk, which is denser than the silk most luxury brands use, and is the reason our robes still look like themselves after eight years.

10% of profits fund women's education and entrepreneurship.

The Takeaway

If you are giving silk as a gift and you are uncertain about size, choose a robe. The fit forgives. The garment earns its place. The recipient will not have to write you an awkward email about exchanging it. If you already know what the recipient wears and you want the gift after the gift, choose pajamas.

Either way, you are giving a piece made one piece at a time by master artisans in Vietnam's historic silk villages, French seams throughout, machine washable, available from XS to 4XL, free returns and exchanges for 30 days, and shipped in a silk pouch with a handwritten note from the artisan who made it. Find the right size when you are ready.

How Our Robes Are Made

Every Tara Sartoria robe is made one piece at a time by master artisans in Vietnam's historic silk villages. The silk is 27 momme mulberry, woven on heritage looms, denser than the silk most luxury brands use, finished with French seams that are fully enclosed on both sides. Sizes run XS to 4XL as standard, with custom sizing available when needed. Every robe is machine washable on a delicate cycle. 10% of profits fund women's education and entrepreneurship.

The recipient will not think about any of this on the morning the gift arrives. They will think about it in year five, when the robe is still wearing the way it wore on the first morning.

The Takeaway

The best silk robe for a gift is a long robe in a restrained color, sized up if you are uncertain, made one piece at a time by master artisans, in 27 momme silk, with French seams, machine washable, sized XS to 4XL. The right answer for most buyers, in most years, for most recipients, is the long classic robe in charcoal, deep navy, or ivory. If you are giving silk to someone for the first time, this is the gift. Find the right size when you are ready. See the collection if you would rather look first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a robe really a safer silk gift than pajamas?

Yes, for most gift-buying situations. A robe has two fit points: shoulders and sash. Pajamas have five: shoulders, chest, waist, hip, and inseam. A robe sized one up or one down is still wearable. Pajamas sized one off in the wrong place usually are not. The exception is when you know the recipient's pajama size from direct evidence, not from a guess.

What is the safest silk robe for a gift I am not sure about?

A long classic silk robe in charcoal, deep navy, or ivory. The cut is modest, the color works across most wardrobes, and the long length flatters most bodies. The Tara Sartoria long robe is the most-gifted piece in the collection for this reason. Sizes run XS to 4XL, machine washable, free 30-day returns and exchanges.

What if the robe doesn't fit?

We accept free returns and exchanges for 30 days, and custom sizing is available when needed for a small fee. Recipients can initiate the exchange directly without needing to involve the gift-giver. The process is designed so the recipient never has to make the gift awkward.

Are silk robes machine washable?

Yes. All Tara Sartoria silk pieces are machine washable on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees, then laid flat to dry. Good silk should not spend more time at the dry cleaner than on the person who owns it. The French seam construction and the density of the silk are what make machine washing possible without damage.

How long does a silk robe actually last?

A silk robe made one piece at a time, from 27 momme mulberry silk, with French seams, machine washed on the delicate cycle, typically lasts eight to ten years of regular use. We have customers wearing robes from 2020 who report the silk has not visibly changed. The fabric softens slightly with use, which most people describe as an improvement.

Why do most luxury brands stop at XL?

Mass-market luxury is built around standardized production runs, and adding more sizes increases the cost of every size. Tara Sartoria makes the full XS to 4XL range in the same silk, with the same French seam construction, and the same one-piece-at-a-time production model, because the brand was started on the belief that luxury should fit real people. Custom sizing is available beyond 4XL when needed.
