I discovered silk late in life, at 82. Had it not been for COVID-19, I might have never known the joys of silk, the comfort of silk, indeed the magic of silk. Of course I had some acquaintance with silk over the years, but never what could be called intimate, and, as I was to find out, never with the most authentic silk available. It took a pandemic to achieve that level of acquaintance.
When I first ventured out in the early months of the reign of the coronavirus known as COVID-19, I donned a blue cloth surgical mask. After a few hours of discomfort, I vowed to find an alternative, a facemask that would be kinder to my face and to a breathing apparatus somewhat impaired by years of living with men who smoked--I myself never took up the nasty habit. Little did I know that I was about to be pampered by handloomed, high-count momme natural mulberry silk.
My internet search turned up a wide selection of silk facemasks from a variety of suppliers. What’s an old girl to do? Well, I started reading the customer reviews. The one that won me over was from a father about his daughter’s reaction to his gift of a silk facemask from Tara Sartoria. The review began with a quote from his daughter, “I can breathe with comfort and style now! Thanks, Dad!” and it ended with the father’s words, “I am so happy I found such a beautiful and practical gift for my little girl!”
Immediately I ordered a facemask for myself, as I remembered the words of an old saying, “A woman may not always be a queen to her husband, but she will always be a princess to her father.”
